Episode notes
This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are talking all about code-switching and how our identities and intersections dictate how we choose to (and are sometimes forced to) navigate the world.
There’s a phenomenon that all of us that are marginalized people experience, probably on a pretty regular basis, called code-switching when amongst mixed-company.
To code-switch is to change the way you speak – maybe almost involuntarily – when you’re engaging people perceived to be of similar lived experience, distinctly different than when you’re amongst people perceived to be of varied, differing backgrounds.
Most of us adjust our tone and timbre according to the person we’re addressing. We speak to our friends one way. To our grandmother a different way. And to our boss in a completely different way.
But does code-switching still serve us?
Some feel it’s the key to upward mobility. Molly from HBO’s Insecure had sage advice for her new law intern Rasheeda aka Da-Da for refusing to code-switch but Da-Da seemed to be doing just fine without it.

About the show
Sometimes the people, places, and things we love don’t love us back. We’re fans, but we also have some ANTI- feelings toward them. Every week on FANTI, journalists Tre’vell Anderson and jarrett hill bring their pop culture and political expertise to things we must stan and stand up against. FANTI is a place where nuance reigns supreme with energetic, complicated, and sometimes difficult conversations that bring deep knowledge and thoughtful perspective to the things we love and rage about, from the White House to the Real House(wives).
