Judge John Hodgman Episode 185: Campering with the Evidence

Dale brings the case against her husband, Shawn. Dale bought a small trailer, intending to convert it to a food truck for her business. She's figured out it isn't suitable as a food truck, and now she has plans to make it into a small camper. Shawn says the trailer won't work as a camper, either, and that it's time to sell it. Who's right? Who's wrong?

Thanks to Joe Pritchard for suggesting this week's case name!

EVIDENCE

Submitted by Dale

Exhibit A: Video of the inside of the the trailer after I gutted it, which gives you an idea of size and lays out where everything went for the food trailer.

Exhibit B: Plans for the camper conversion (PDF)

Exhibit C: A photo of Shawn and I laying on our dining room table (basically the same size as the camper would be) to show there is plenty of room for sleeping.

Exhibit D: This photo “before” shows the trailer when I bought it.

Exhibit E: This shows the trailer as it is today.

Exhibit F: This shows the hand painting of the trailer, demonstrating the love and care that went into this little buddy.

Exhibit G: The back patio area of the trailer, which would be great for a little area to sit while camping in a camper.

EXHIBIT H: Two interior photos of the trailer as it is today.

Bear Food

Every camper is a food truck to a bear! x-D

Good call

I think Dale really does have a responsibility first to the people she begged money off of. It wouldn't look good to ask for charity, and then turn around and use those funds for a personal toy. That's the sort of thing that turns people off giving to others. Especially in this case where she goes on a podcast saying it wouldn't be a big deal to take out a loan of $15,000...um, then why did you ask for charity in the first place? Kickstarter "investors" are just donating, they get no profits back. So they like to think that they aren't being taken advantage of by business owners who just don't want to have to spend their own money! Not that Dale intended to do that, but that is how it will look if the final product is a personal camper and NOT a business investment.

Couldn't you raise the roof to fit the vent that's required?

Since the 90's, hip-hop artists have been raising the roof. I think that you could potentially raise the roof on this structure to fit that vent thing that the state requires. It wouldn't be easy, but it seems like it could be done... Just a thought.

Bittersweet indeed.

I think the ruling is sound, even in its heaviness.

But boy-- I aspire to be more like you, Dale! Truly.

Snakes of a Trailer

While talking about camping, snakes, and trailers I was really wishing Jesse would make a comment something like "I've had it with these mother f**ing snakes on my mother f**ing fried pie food trailer!"

Sell it

Shawn is right. He's always right.

Um...

Shawn? Is that you?

The recipe card reads:

Boil ten squirrel heads until tender in just enough water to cover. Make pie crust and line casserole. Place a layer of heads and some juice. Dot with butter and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Make another layer of heads, juice and more pie crust strips. Cook in oven for one-half hour. (Serves six).

Ymmmmmmm?

BE THANKFUL, BE VERY VERY THANKFUL

Cut your losses!

Sell the camper. It's far too narrow to be comfortable, even if you find a way to incorporate a fold-up bed mechanism. You're spending sooo much money on different investments, you could use every extra penny you can get.
