Episode notes
In the mid 1980s, Kim Deal got married and moved to Boston. Once she was settled, she replied to a classified ad looking for a bassist. Out of that exchange, she and three new friends formed the Pixies.
During a 10+ year hiatus for the Pixies, Deal formed The Breeders who eventually went on to create the smash hit Cannonball. She wrote the song for their 1993 album Last Splash, which made it to the US Billboard Hot 100.
The Breeders have broken up and reformed a handful of times, toured sporadically. When we talked in 2018, The Breeders’ had just released their first new record in a decade: All Nerve. In 2024, a career first for Kim Deal: her debut solo album. It’s called Nobody Loves You More.
In honor of her first solo album, we’re taking it back to our interview with the singer-songwriter. Kim Deal talked about the music scene in her hometown, transitioning from the Pixies to The Breeders, and what it felt like the first moment she realized that she had written a song that people wanted to dance to.
This interview originally aired in February of 2018.
