Judge John Hodgman Episode 188: I Pledge a Grievance

Christian brings the case against his wife, Corrin. They're both big fans of a university sports team, and aren't afraid to show their spirit. Christian wants to fly their team's flag outside their house on game days, but Corrin says that's one step too far. Who's right? Who's wrong?

Thanks to Lisa Minogue-White for this week's case name! And thanks to Julian Burrell for engineering this week.

You can see John Hodgman live at his remaining 2014 tourdates in Alexandria, Virginia on December 15 & 16. You can also visit www.bit.ly/notacult for a Secret Society event that will be open to the public.

Exhibit A

"This is a photo of an Alabama flag is hanging at an angle in the manner I envision for the house."

Exhibit B

The flag design is not the one I would choose, though, so I've also included the link to the flag I would want, as sold at Dicks.

The Bama/Tennessee connection

During this episode Jesse Thorn references Toronto Argonauts former QB Condrege Holloway and Toronto Blue Jays knuckleball wizard R A Dickey. Ironically both of those great players were Tennessee Volunteers! A fact that, to a super passionate and knowledgeable Bama fan, would cause grinding of teeth and mumbling of profanity. As a TN fan born and raised I would side with Corrin. Why would anyone want to display a flag with such a sissy looking "A"?

Great show, really enjoyed it!

I get really upset at

I get really upset at "comedy" rulings. These people have to put up TWO mounts, and Corrin has to deal with a second weird flag that neither of them want, just for the sake of Judge Hodgman's amusement? These are people's lives, your honor.

Seeing an Alabama flag in my neighborhood

Lets me know which house to egg every Friday night.

Roll Tide

Don't most folks identify with the teams of the school they went for their undergrad degree, not their graduate degree??

Canadian Football Rules and Toronto Argonauts and John Candy

Good evening John and Jesse

I thoroughly enjoyed your I Pledge a Grievance episode.
As a Torontonian I was chuffed by your interest in our Canadian Football team, the Toronto Argonauts.

Here is a factoid which might interest you:
Canadian Football actually does have 4 Downs, like American Football.
The difference is, in Canada we Punt on the Third Down…just to be safe.

Unfortunately I can not take credit for that joke. I am happy to credit those bon motts to the inimitable John Candy; a Torontonian who left us far to soon.

Another factoid:
Did you know that John Candy was part owner of the Toronto Argonauts from 1991 (a year they won the Grey Cup…our Super Bowl) until just before his death in 1994?

Bill Pollock
Toronto

Correction...

...far TOO soon.
