This week you better have your eyes lubricated because we are side eyeing EVERYTHANG- from California and it's horrible history of the genocide of Indigenous People, to a certain celebrity who just keeps fucking up! But before we get to the korners James is super excited about A Star Is Born, and Nnekay joins in on the the questionable reason as to why we even need another Lion King, is this one even "live action"? The duo also talk about when to have tough conversations with people- James gives examples and Nnekay gives more examples as to why the many tiny mistreatment of black women in the medical field could lead to Black Maternal Mortality. Let's get to it!

Pop Rocket Ep. 201 Our Awkward Thanksgiving Show

Show:
Pop Rocket
Guests:
Margaret Wappler
Guests:
Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh
Guests:
Karen Tongson

Happy Thanksgiving, Rocketeers! We at Pop Rocket are thankful for you, our listeners. For the purposes of this episode, Wynter will be playing the role of Margaret’s sister who always criticizes her stuffing recipe, while Karen is the gay aunt who sold Wappler a bunk Subaru.

There was a lot of tension in the studio, and everyone was walking on eggshells. Will our panelists be able to make it through a discussion of awkward family gatherings without bursting into tears? Will Wynter be triggered by a clip of The Family Stone? Will Margaret angrily scream, “Eat the fish, b***h!”? The panel dissects some of their favorite awkward moments--on screen and off--and try to figure out why we’re so captivated by angry, obnoxious relatives. If any of you out there have concerns about fraught dinner conversations over turkey, stuffing, and sides, the panelists are here for you!

All Abouts

Margaret alerted us to a fine piece of writing from New York Times critic Amanda Hess, who laments, “nothing ever ends anymore and it’s driving me insane.” If you’re overwhelmed by sequels, prequels, reboots, and overlapping universes, she’s a kindred spirit.

If no one spots Wynter out in the wild over the next two weeks, it’s probably because she’s playing her newest video game obsession Red Dead Redemption II.

Karen recently discovered the new ABC sitcom Single Parents starring Taran Killam, Leighton Meester and Jake Choi.

That's My Jam

Karen - Shawn Mendes - Lost in Japan

Wynter - Michelle Obama - Becoming

Margaret - Barrie - Michigan

With Karen Tongson, Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh, and Margaret Wappler.

One Bad Mother, Episode 281: Am I Supposed To Want A Vacuum For Christmas?

Show:
One Bad Mother

Biz and Theresa face the hard question many women may find themselves needing to answer around the holidays: “Am I supposed to want a vacuum for Christmas?” Gift circulars that advertise gifts for the whole family suggest that kids want toys, dad needs a new television or gaming console to escape the noise, and then there is a picture of a vacuum. Now, who could that be for? Are we supposed to only want gifts that can support the family in a practical way? Similarly to how we feel paralyzed on the rare occasion that we have free time, moms can find it equally hard to know what to ask for in terms of a gift we might really like that is solely for us. Despite what commercials might say, it’s probably not a vacuum…whatever “vacuum” means to you. Plus, Biz and Theresa can’t remember anything and think maybe it’s a good sign!

Switchblade Sisters Episode 52: 'The Skeleton Key' with 'Lez Bomb' Director Jenna Laurenzo

The Skeleton Key

We've got a great episode this week with the director of the new film Lez Bomb, Jenna Laurenzo. While her film is a romantic comedy about a woman attempting to come out to her family on Thanksgiving, the film that Jenna chose to discuss is nothing like that at all! The movie Jenna picked is 2005's The Skeleton Key. While many have probably forgotten about this movie, we certainly haven't. Jenna and April discuss some of the more "delicate" issues that are brought up in the film - e.g. the opening lynching scene. Plus they touch upon the genius of Gena Rowlands and John Hurt. Jenna dives deep on the process of making her debut feature. She elaborates on how she was able to secure actors like Bruce Dern, Kevin Pollak, and Cloris Leachman for a film she shot in her own parents house. And she explains the lessons she learned from working with the Farrelly brothers.

Check out the trailer for Lez Bomb which will be in select theaters on November 9th.

And if you haven't seen it yet, go watch The Skeleton Key
