Inside Pop

It's official- good things happen in April and this past weekend was proof positive with two of the most anticipated pop culture events of the year- the Game of Thrones epic white walker showdown and Avengers: Endgame. Somehow, we handled (survived) all of the epic pop culture offerings this weekend and have thoughts, questions and predictions! (Warning: This episode contains spoilers for Game of Thrones, but NOT Avengers)

We start off with our reactions to the epic third episode of Game of Thrones and one of the most surprising and satisfying Stark moves of the entire series! We chat about the suspense, horror and action filled 87 minute journey that took us on a fire and icy ride through Winterfell. Plus, we pour some out for those who didn't make it and try to predict what will happen next.

Then, Sean tries to discuss Avengers: Endgame without spoiling anything for Amita. We discuss what it was like to avoid spoilers all weekend and how it may have been easier than expected.

Plus, Sean attended a few screenings at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and gives his take on the new Wu-Tang Clan doc series, Of Mics and Men and a new Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer film called Luce.

And in the Big Sell, Amita reviews the 2019 playlist from our podcast friends JoJCast and sells Sean on an interesting essay from Vulture about pop plagiarism.

Note: NO Avengers Endgame spoilers here (because we all hadn't seen it yet). Warning: This episode contains Freddie's very bad interpretation of a Cajun? French accent? We're still unsure.

Avengers: Infinity War

This is it! Infinity War has arrived - and the 'Who Shot Ya?' crew is ready. Drea Clark is on the program once again to discuss the biggest movie ever released, Avengers: Infinity War. They try to keep the SPOILERS to a minimum - while still taking time to ponder how Thanos' chin looks like a nutsack. They discuss how Marvel movies operate more like comic books than standard films. Plus, Ricky, Drea, April, and Alonso think up characters that they would add to the Avengers team from different film genres (Heads up, one of the genres is James Cameron movies). Plus, as always, we have our staff picks.

In news, Mark Ruffalo accidentally spoiled Avengers: Infinity War, Steven Spielberg reveals how Robin Williams helped him get through shooting Schindler's List, and Tom Cruise jumped out of a plane 106 times.

This week, Guy Branum, Karen Tongson and Margaret Wappler are joined by Andrew Ti, host of the “Yo, Is This Racist?” podcast. They take a look at HBO’s West World, and sci fi narratives that explore robots with feelings. Season Two just got started and the team is fairly certain it will be just as complicated as the first.

Karen is all about Alexis Bledel in Handmaid’s Tale Season 2, even though it puts a character she cares about through even more difficulties. Margaret and Guy are all about Michelle Wolf’s routine at The White House Correspondent’s Dinner and are very confused about the outrage that’s surrounded it. Andrew is all about Avengers: Infinity War even though he didn’t quite understand the storytelling subtleties of the plot.

The panel will their discuss what they think of West World, its convoluted plot and the idea of sentient robots having feelings.

With Karen Tongson, Guy Branum, Margaret Wappler and Andrew Ti.

That’s My Jam:

Karen Tongson - Maroon 5, SZA - What Lovers Do

Andrew Ti - The Higher Brother - Made in China

Margaret Wappler - The Pointer Sisters - Automatic.

Guy Branum Kacey Musgraves - High Horse

Each week we’ll add everyone’s jams to our Spotify playlists.
