The autumn TV season has officially begun, and let's be honest, there is TOO MUCH stuff to watch out there. If you're feeling overwhelmed, fear not. The Pop Rocket panel has lots of binge-worthy shows to recommend, and a couple new shows they think you should skip.

One panelist will tell you why they loved Netflix's Maniac, and another who couldn't make it through the season. If you're curious whether Amazon Prime's The First is worth your time, Tongson's got some opinions. They'll cover Bojack Horseman, National Treasure, Ozark, The Sinner and more.

All Abouts

Wynter is all about the tea behind Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of Instagram, departing Facebook, which bought the photo-sharing app six years ago.

Karen is all about basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar's latest gig: staff writer on the new Veronica Mars.

Guy is all about the new Netflix romcom Nappily Ever After starring Sanaa Lathan.

That's My Jam

Karen - SWV (Sisters with Voices) - Right Here

Guy - Troye Sivan - Seventeen.

With Guy Branum, Karen Tongson, and Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh.

Game Night

This episode marks the return of the "Professional Contrarian" Inkoo Kang to talk about the new dark, action comedy Game Night. Before they get into the discussion of the film, the crew takes time to dissect this year's Oscars. They point out some of the sweeter moments (Greta Gerwig and Laura Dern, James Ivory's shirt) but all agree there's still work to be done. In discussing Game Night they break down the dark comedy genre and reveal some of their favorites. April professes her love for Todd Solondz, Inkoo sees "competent" as high praise, Alonso gives a shout to Pedro Almodovar, and Ricky inadvertently creates a mash up movie - 'One Flew Over the Vampire's Nest.' PLUS, the gang finishes up by copying Game Night and playing a round of CELEBRITY.

Weekly Movie Recommendations:

April - Zoology
Alonso - Prick Up Your Ears
Inkoo - Oh Lucy!
Ricky - The Gift

PLUS, we have two Spotify playlists. One is for Movie Soundtracks and the other is for Movie Scores. Check 'em out!

Next week we're discussing A Wrinkle In Time with Drea Clark.

With Inkoo Kang, Alonso Duralde, April Wolfe, and Ricky Carmona.

This week, we are joined by film critic and host of the Linoleum Knife podcast Alonso Duralde! Alonso will be with us for the next couple of months while Margaret is on maternity leave, bringing his particular knowledge of film and the industry to the show. But this week: Girls Trip. The movie stars Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah, and breakout star Tiffany Haddish. They discuss Tiffany Haddish's hilarious performance in this movie, but does Hollywood know what to do with her next? They talk about the role of blackness and black female friendship in this movie, and why it's important more of these films get made. And finally, and probably most importantly, they talk about the role that black hair plays in the movie, and what each of the character's hair styles tells you about their personality.

Guy is all about The Beaverton, which is Canada's answer to The Onion News Network, and Wynter is all about the Jason Bateman led Netflix series Ozark. Plus, Karen catches up on Queen Sugar and Alonso is still watching Degrassi. Plus, we hear what each of the panelists is listening to this week.

With Guy Branum, Wynter Mitchell, Alonso Duralde, and Karen Tongson.

Jams:

Guy - Cars That Go Boom - L'Trimm
Alonso - Better The Devil You Know - Kylie Mynogue
Wynter - Idolize Me - Yellow Alex
Karen - Way Back - TLCand

Each week we’ll add everyone’s jams to this handy August Spotify playlist.
